The Dandie Dinmont Terrier

As you may have observed the Dandie’s size and proportions appear rather odd. It is that very fact that makes them so endearing. They are DIFFERENT.

The Dandie Dinmont’s head looks big for his overall size, though it should not be out of proportion. The profuse soft silky hair on the crown accentuates this peculiarity. The jaws are powerful, equipped with formidable teeth that will kill rats with celenity.
The rich, dark, hazel eyes betoken intelligence and dignity. The ears are set low and hang close on the cheeks. The neck is muscular and well developed. The body is long and flexible, with well sprung ribs and round chest, the latter being well let down between the forelegs. The back, rather low at the shoulders, arches over the loins and then makes a gradual drop. The tail is curved like a scimitar. The front legs are short and very strong, being well equipped with bone and muscle. The hind legs are a trifle longer and are place rather wide apart.

The coat, from the scull to the root of the tail, is a mixture of harsh and soft hair, which gives it a ply feeling. That on the under part of the body is light in colour and softer. Colours may be either pepper or mustard; the former ranging from a dark bluish black to a light sliver grey. Mustards vary from a reddish brown to a pale fawn.

The Adventures of Angus and Ailsa

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin......

Once upon a time there was a Dandie Dinmont Terrier (D.D.T) called MOORBARROW TOPPER, better known as “ANGUS” (that’s him, top dog, above) who had a companion called TORBRAE MOON MAGIC, better known as “AILSA” (that’s her, on the lower berth) They are great friends and as you can imagine, inseparable. However our story begins with ANGUS, he is the elder by two years. AILSA joins in the adventures later with ANGUS as her mentor.

Tell us about Angus & Ailsa

Introduction... to.... Angus. D.D.T.

As I write this poem to him
He sits nestled at my feet
Content to rest in the interim
And in repose, he looks so sweet
But beware of resting Dandies,
Do not disturb this lad, for sure
Not even doggie candies
Would be strong enough a lure

You see he has had his walk
He has today traversed the glen
He has put to flight the sparrowhawk
As well as a score or more greyhen
He has trailed the scent, espied the fox
And drunk from the mountain streams
He has dicovered the setts of sleeping brocks
But disturbed them not in dreams.

He has crossed the purple heather patch
He has inhaled that sweet clean air
Once onto a scent he's hard to catch
Highland creatures. best beware.
He' a Dandie out o' Cumbria
Audrey Heaton's clan ye ken?
Whilst I hail frae Northumbria
Near old Danie Dinmont's glen.

So it's as ah telt ye
Leave the poor wee dug tae rest
Let his dreams be carefree
And may good breeding stand the test
For Angus is no a 'toon' dug
He's mair at hame wi' heather
A peat fire to keep his wee hoose snug
Irrespective o' the weather

My Heilan Dug

I have a friend called ANGUS
He’s a bonny heilan dog
He walks the moors in all weathers
In rain, in snow, in fog.
He is sort, of on the shortish side
Eleven inches to the shoulder,
A great big heid and a peppery coat
And for courage, there’s nowt bolder.

He runs and barks at birds and beasts
As we trek the heathered hill.
He’s inquisitive, a nosey dog
And rarely standing still.
His busy little hairy legs
Complete wi’ heilan gait,
Cover the ground at amazing speed.
He has nae time to wait.

For this time is HIS prime time
When he’s free to run and roam.
A Dandie Dinmont on the loose,
Though not so far from home.
For Dandies are fond of comfort,
A wee place by the fireside,
Or a chair I’ve just vacated,
Is a place he likes to bide.

Big soft brown eyes in a face of grey
Watches every move I make
I groom him to perfection,
Only to watch hime do the ‘shake’
He rolls around and messes up
All the grooming I have done
If at the SHOW he’d behaved himself
I’m sure WE would have WON.

Torbrae Moon Magic (Ailsa)

Let me introduce you
To a new pup in the troupe.
Her name, TORBRAE MOON MAGIC
She’ll make the Dandies whoop.
She’s a peppered coated ‘sweetie’
Who has a wiggle to her beam,
She roams the hills with ANGUS
They make a handsome heiland team.

Their friendship, is platonic,
For he is teaching her the ‘knowledge’
A one on one tuition
It’s better than at college.
For you ken ANGUS is a heilan dog
Brought up in heilan ways,
Whilst AILSA, (TORBRAE MOON MAGIC)
Has been a ‘toonie’ most of her days.

Those days they number very few
Reaching six months at the most,
But those lines are there and are filling out
A Champion Dam one day I’ll boast.
She’s not much at the moment
Just a wee pup running free,
Learning from her mentor
Her heilan A.B.C.

ANGUS (MOORBARROW TOPPER)
Takes care of AILSA, tenderly,
He fusses her and cleans her eyes
So that her face remains, stain free.
They share the toys, they romp, they play,
They investigate all new smells.
AILSA (TOREBRAE MOON MAGIC)
Is a name that WILL ring bells.

Aromatherapy

Fragrance fill the airways
and adheres to all around.
ANGUS loves the mornings
and the fresh smells on the ground.
He leads his little protege
through the early morning dew
And from the misty, purple peaks,
they stand and marvel at the view.

For this is the land of ANGUS
with its heather and its pines.
These are the streams, the very life blood,
of those special Highland wines.
The smell of fresh cut Scottish peat
does oft times assail the air,
ANGUS feels his hot blood rush
as once more his nostrils flare.

He scents a stag and off he bounds
to chase the Monarch o’ the Glen.
AILSA, his wee protege, hesitates,
but soon is off again.
Leaping, striding, bounding,
side by side they run.
Who’d of thought a lesson in aromatherapy
would turn out to be such fun.
